Cooking for comfort.

Hello, everyone.

I’m so glad you‘re here.

Things have been pretty hectic and scattered here at the farm recently—timber harvest happening, family health issues, getting the last of the garden harvest in before things freeze, managing the sheep before breeding season, the list goes on and on.

What do I do when I’m overloaded, overwhelmed, and stretched thin with keeping all the balls in the air? I cook.

Cooking grounds me. It’s a way that I show love for the people around me, and just as importantly, it’s a way that I show love for myself. It’s meditative, the chopping and measuring and stirring, filling the house with good smells while something yummy simmers or roasts or bakes. My favorite times are those cold, snowy winter Sunday late afternoons when the sheep are tended and tucked in for the night, the dogs are tired and collapsed in heaps by the woodstove. David sits at the counter and keeps me company. Sometimes he’s my prep cook, mostly he keeps the wine glasses filled. We chat about anything and everything, then tuck into whatever I’ve cooked.

Often, of course, whatever I’m cooking features Lucky Dog Farm lamb. This week as the rain was coming down and the temperature was dropping, I made a big shepherd’s pie—great to freeze any leftovers for those nights when cooking is a chore and not a comfort. Get the recipe here:

And as always, I’d love to hear from you! What’s been cooking in your kitchen lately? Did you give the recipe a try? Tell me how it turned out!

Happy cooking,

Farmer Judith
